Leesburg was established in 1758, named for the Lee family, and is the seat of Loudoun County. It grew where the Carolina Road, now U.S. 15, crossed the Potomac Ridge Road, now Route 7.

The town is two miles south of the Potomac River, which divided the Union from the Confederacy during the Civil War. Leesburg changed hands about 150 times before the war ended.

The historic downtown, around King and Market Streets, has historic sites and museums, restaurants, breweries, boutiques and antiques.
